Anonymous European retail engagement

Vendor Performance & Spend Platform for a European Retail Group

A software foundation for turning imported supplier data into governed categorisation, performance and spend workflows for a distributed product team.

Context

Supplier analysis depends on trustworthy structure before visualisation.

A European retail group needed a product foundation for importing, validating and categorising supplier information, then exposing useful vendor, category, performance and spend workflows.

The case is anonymous and contains no logo, client screen, supplier record or proprietary metric.

Problem

Data quality, domain rules and product workflows had to evolve together.

The technical challenge combined ingestion and validation with a usable application for business-facing analysis.

  1. 01

Spreadsheet imports and exports needed controlled validation rather than one-off manual handling.

  2. 02

Vendor and category structures had to remain searchable and usable across performance and spend views.

  3. 03

The initial API and deployment foundation had to support a distributed, remote agile product team.

Approach and solution

Establish the service and API foundation, then connect business workflows.

The implementation combined Java and Spring Boot services with Spring Data REST, HATEOAS and Spring Security, backed by PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch.

Angular workflows supported categorisation, vendor performance, spend visualisation and Excel import/export. Containerised delivery and Azure supported the team’s deployment context.

Role and responsibility

Nik’s role: first developer on the initial product foundation.

Nik established the initial Java/Spring Boot codebase and API direction, then contributed across backend and Angular product workflows.

The work included modelling domain behaviour, import/export paths, validation and search, while collaborating remotely with product and engineering stakeholders.

Architecture and delivery

From controlled imports to business-facing workflows.

The diagram is an original abstraction of the verified technology path.

  1. 01

Delivery

Verified delivery scope.

Foundation

Initial Java/Spring Boot codebase and API structure.

Data workflows

Import/export, validation, categorisation and searchable persistence.

Product workflows

Angular views for vendor, category, performance and spend work.

Result and current status

A maintainable starting point for a distributed product team.

The engagement delivered the initial software and API foundation plus working data and analysis flows that later contributors could extend.

No quantified business impact is published because the available sources support the engineering contribution, not a verified commercial metric.

Ways to work together

Three clear ways to move a difficult system forward.

Choose the smallest engagement that can produce a useful decision and a credible delivery path.

Need to turn operational files into a dependable product workflow?

We can clarify the data model, validation risks, integration boundary and first delivery slice.

How to start

Free initial conversation
We clarify the problem, whether we are a good fit and a useful next step.
Paid technical consultation
Focused work on a concrete technical question or system. We agree the scope, time and fee before starting.
Paid systems assessment
We map processes, data flows, dependencies and risks, then prioritize recommendations. Deliverables and fee are agreed for the specific scope.

What to send: Describe the problem, current systems, desired outcome and timing constraints. Include a budget range or brief/RFP if available. A short overview without passwords or confidential customer data is enough to start.
